A King On The Checkerboard

The checkerboard fills the middle of the dial: a square shield of bright red and white squares with a red border, reaching from the ten to the two and down to the date.
In front of it sits the king, in profile, his beard full and his crown on his head. He is finished in grainy copper, rust and deep red-brown, drawn with fine dark red lines, so he reads warm against the cool red and white behind him.
