Rose gold stone-set chronograph on a dark walnut desk beside a fountain pen

40MM ROSE GOLD · OPENWORKED DIAL · CHRONOGRAPH

The Pattern Is Cut, Not Printed

The chocolate dial is opened up across its whole face, and every opening holds a stone.

A printed pattern is one operation. This is the opposite. The dial starts as chocolate brown lacquer, and the spotted pattern is cut out of it, so what you are looking at is a hole in the lacquer rather than ink laid over the top.

Then the openings have to be filled. Every one takes its own seat cut into the metal underneath and its own stone dropped in and pressed over, which is why the pattern has no two gaps the same size and why it takes the time it takes.

The baguette hour markers go on last, laid across the pattern so the hours still read at a glance. Hold it under a lamp and the brown almost disappears.

ROSE GOLD, SET THROUGH

Set From Every Angle

The bezel is only where it starts.

The bezel is a single row of square-cut stones, channel-set so they sit edge to edge with no metal showing between them. That is a harder setting than claws, because every stone has to be the same height or the row catches the light unevenly.

Below it the case keeps going. Both flanks of every lug carry a line of small round stones, and the guard around the crown is set the same way, so the watch reads from the side as well as from the top.

Rose gold is the right metal for it. The copper in the alloy warms the stones instead of fighting them, and it is the same warmth that ties the case to the chocolate dial and the brown rubber strap.

How A Stone-Set Case Is Made

The metal is cut before a single stone is touched.

STAGE 01

The Alloy Mixed

Copper is blended into the gold to pull the colour warm. The ratio decides the shade, and it is fixed before anything is cast.

STAGE 02

The Case Cut

Case, lugs, crown guard and pushers are machined, then the surfaces are polished while they can still be reached.

STAGE 03

Seats Cut For Every Stone

A seat is drilled and shaped into the metal for each stone, and tiny beads of gold are raised beside it to hold it. This is the slow part.

STAGE 04

The Stones Set

Each stone goes in by hand and the beads are pressed over its edge. The row is checked under a loupe for height and alignment before the next section is started.

STAGE 05

Dial Fitted And Checked

The openworked dial and hands go on, then the chronograph action, the pusher feel and the clasp are checked by hand before the watch is packed.

Why People Stop You To Look

A stone-set gold chronograph is a special-order piece abroad, quoted in months and priced past a car. This one keeps the rose gold, the hand-set bezel and the openworked chocolate dial, and asks $1,299.

Frequently Asked Questions

check_box

Are the stones real, or printed on?

They are cut stones. Each one sits in a seat cut into the metal and is held by beads pressed over its edge, which is why the bezel row is even and the dial pattern is not. Nothing on this watch is printed or foiled. We do not supply a grading certificate and we will not quote you a carat weight, because we cannot show you one.

check_box

Does it need a battery?

No. It is automatic — the movement winds itself from the motion of your wrist. Wear it and it runs. Leave it in a drawer for a couple of days and it stops, and a few turns of the crown or a minute on the wrist starts it again.

check_box

Is the dial pattern painted on the surface?

No. The pattern is cut through the chocolate lacquer and the openings are filled with set stones, so you are looking down into the dial rather than at something laid on top of it. Under a light the depth is obvious.

check_box

Does the chronograph work?

Yes. The two pushers start, stop and reset the counters at 3 and 6, with running seconds at 9. They are working counters, not decoration.

check_box

Can the strap be changed?

Yes. It is a brown rubber strap on a rose gold folding clasp and it comes off at the lugs like any strap. Rubber handles heat, water and daily wear better than leather, which is why it is fitted this way.

check_box

Can I swim with it?

No. It is rated to 30m, which covers rain and hand-washing. Keep it out of pools and the sea, and off the wrist in a shower.

check_box

How long does delivery take?

Ten to eighteen days to most countries, fifteen to twenty-five inside Iraq. Shipping is free, tracked and insured, and you get the tracking number as soon as it leaves us.

check_box

Can I ask questions before I order?

Yes, and we would rather you did. Message the page on Facebook or Instagram — a real person answers, usually within the hour.
