Black chronograph with an ice-blue dial resting on a dark walnut desk beside a fountain pen

40MM BLACK DLC · GOLD CROWN AND PUSHERS · CHRONOGRAPH

The Black Is Harder Than The Steel Beneath It

Diamond-like carbon, grown onto the case in a vacuum chamber rather than sprayed over it.

Most black watches are steel with a coat of something on top, and the giveaway arrives about a year in — the lug edges go silver, the clasp wears back to bright metal, and what you bought as black is on its way to being grey.

DLC works the other way round. The case goes into a vacuum chamber and carbon is deposited onto it atom by atom until it bonds into the surface of the steel. The layer that forms is thinner than a sheet of paper and harder than the steel carrying it, so the everyday knocks that scuff a painted case slide off this one.

It is a slow, expensive process for a finish most people will simply read as black. That is rather the point: it is still black in three years, and still black at the edges.

ICE BLUE DIAL · THREE BLACK COUNTERS

One Soft Colour In A Sea Of Black

Pale robin's-egg blue, and every other surface on the watch taken out of its way.

The dial is a pale blue-green, somewhere between ice and robin's egg, and it is finished flat with a fine grain rather than polished. A glossy dial in this colour would flare white under a lamp and lose itself; the grain keeps the colour steady in a bright room and in a dim one.

Three counters are recessed into it in black, each ringed in white, sitting at three, six and nine. There is no date window and no cyclops, so the blue runs uninterrupted from the markers to the centre.

Everything else is black or gold. The bezel is black with gold numerals, the hands are gold, the crown and pushers are gold, and the strap is black rubber. Nothing on the watch competes with the dial, which is why a colour this soft still reads from across a table.

How A Black Chronograph Like This Is Built

The coating comes late, and everything before it has to be right.

STAGE 01

The Case Cut

The case, bezel, crown guards and pushers are machined from steel first. Every bevel and brushed face is finished now, because nothing can be corrected once the coating is on.

STAGE 02

Stripped Clean

The parts are cleaned down to bare metal in stages. A fingerprint left on a case at this point becomes a flaw sealed under the black forever.

STAGE 03

Into The Chamber

In a vacuum, carbon is deposited onto the steel until a diamond-like layer bonds into the surface. It is measured in microns and it is harder than the case it covers.

STAGE 04

The Dial Laid Down

The ice-blue base is finished with its fine grain, the three black counters are set in and ringed, and the applied markers are seated and filled with lume.

STAGE 05

Gold Fitted, Then Checked

The gold crown and pushers are threaded in, the bezel numerals are filled, and the chronograph action, hand alignment and clasp are checked by hand before boxing.

A Colour You Rarely See

Pale ice blue on a fully black case is an unusual pairing. Most people have never handled one in person.

Coated, Not Painted

Diamond-like carbon bonded into the steel in a vacuum. There is no layer of paint waiting to chip off an edge.

Why People Look Twice At This One

A black-coated chronograph with a pale blue dial is a commission, not something on a shelf — the watch first, then the coating, then the dial, and a wait at the end of it. This keeps the black case, the gold crown and pushers and the ice-blue dial, and asks $1,099.

Frequently Asked Questions

check_box

Will the black rub off?

It is not a paint or a spray. Diamond-like carbon is deposited onto the steel in a vacuum and bonds into the surface, ending up harder than the steel underneath. It handles daily wear far better than a coated case, though a hard scrape on a corner will still leave a mark.

check_box

Does it need a battery?

No. It is an automatic chronograph — a weighted rotor winds the mainspring from the movement of your wrist. Left off for a couple of days it stops, and a minute back on the wrist restarts it. There is nothing to replace.

check_box

What colour is the dial exactly?

A pale blue-green, often described as ice blue or robin's-egg blue. It sits between a soft turquoise and a pale sky blue, and it is finished with a fine matte grain rather than a gloss, so it stays the same colour in daylight and under a lamp.

check_box

Does the chronograph actually run?

Yes. The two gold pushers start, stop and reset the counters at three, six and nine. They are working counters, not decorative sub-dials.

check_box

Is there a date window?

No, and that is deliberate on this model line. The dial is left unbroken, which is part of why a colour this pale reads so cleanly.

check_box

Can I swim with it?

No. It is rated to 30m, which covers rain and hand-washing. Keep it out of pools and the sea. The rubber strap itself is fine with water and wipes clean.

check_box

How long does delivery take?

Ten to eighteen days to most countries, fifteen to twenty-five inside Iraq. Shipping is free, tracked and insured, and you get the tracking number as soon as it leaves us.

check_box

Can I ask questions before I order?

Yes, and we would rather you did. Message the page on Facebook or Instagram — a real person answers, usually within the hour.
