FORGED CARBON · CARBON-FIBRE DIAL · STAR EMBLEM · AUTOMATIC CHRONOGRAPH
Black Carbon, Grained Like Damascus Steel
The case and bezel are pressed carbon, and the grey marbling runs through the material rather than sitting on it.
A black steel watch is black only on the surface. The first hard knock takes the colour off a corner, and the silver underneath shows through.
This case has no surface layer to lose. It is forged carbon, chopped fibre pressed with resin until it sets, and the grey marbling across the flanks is the fibre itself, caught where it settled. Turn the watch side-on and the grain runs in tight, wavy lines, grey on black, like Damascus steel. No two cases come out of the press with the same pattern.
The bezel is cut from the same material, with its tachymeter scale printed in white. The crown and both pushers are black, so nothing on the case breaks the dark. At 40 mm across, 12 mm thick and about 50 grams in all, it weighs roughly what an egg does.

THE DIAL
A Fuel Gauge At Nine, A Rev Counter At Three
The counters are drawn as a car's instruments, and a polished steel star takes the place of the third.
The dial is woven carbon fibre, a tight black chequerboard that turns from matte to bright as the light crosses it. The weave runs under everything, the counters included.
The counters borrow from a dashboard. The one at nine is marked km/h, with a small yellow fuel-pump symbol at its base, like the gauge in front of a driver. The one at three is a rev counter, marked x1000/min, with a short line of print underneath, one word of it in bright blue. Both sit inside raised polished steel rings.
At six, the counter holds no numbers and no strokes, only a polished steel three-pointed star in a thin ring. Around them, applied steel markers with white lume point in towards the centre, and a pale blue-grey square marks each hour on the minute track.
How A Forged Carbon Case Is Made
The pattern on the case is decided in the mould, before anyone touches it.
Chopped And Mixed
Carbon fibre is cut short and mixed with resin. Where each strand lands in the mould decides the grain the finished case will carry.
Pressed Under Heat
The mould closes under pressure and heat until the resin cures. The fibres move as it closes, and where they stop is the pattern for good.
Cut From Solid
The cured block is machined into a case and a bezel. Carbon is hard on tooling, and every surface the cutter opens shows more of the grain.
The Scale In White
The tachymeter scale is printed onto the carbon bezel in white, from 60 round to 400, over the marbling.
Movement In
The automatic chronograph movement goes in behind the carbon-fibre dial, and the black crown and pushers are fitted before the watch is checked and boxed.

Why It Reads Like A Dashboard
A forged carbon case has to be pressed, cured and then machined from solid, and it wears out the tooling doing it. Put a woven carbon-fibre dial inside it and a polished steel star at six, and you have an all-black watch with more to look at than most colourful ones. It asks $949.
THE BLACK STAR SPEC
40 mm forged carbon case and bezel, woven carbon-fibre dial, a fuel gauge, a rev counter and a steel star, black canvas strap. Inspected by hand, boxed for presentation, and covered for two years.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the case really carbon, or black-coated steel?
Is the case really carbon, or black-coated steel?
Carbon. Look at the flank in daylight and you will see grey marbling moving through it. Coated steel is flat and even, and it is also far heavier: this whole watch weighs about 50 grams.
Is the star printed on the dial?
Is the star printed on the dial?
No. It is polished steel, set in a thin ring in the counter at six, and it catches the light as the watch moves. That counter carries no numbers or strokes, only the star.
What are the counters at three and nine?
What are the counters at three and nine?
They are drawn as a car's instruments: a fuel gauge at nine, marked km/h with a small yellow pump symbol, and a rev counter at three, marked x1000/min. The pushers beside the crown start, stop and reset the central chronograph hand.
Will my case look exactly like the photographs?
Will my case look exactly like the photographs?
The dial, hands and bezel scale will. The marbling on the case will not, because forged carbon settles differently every time it is pressed. Yours has a grain of its own.
What is the strap made of?
What is the strap made of?
Black woven canvas on top with black stitching, and a black leather lining against the wrist.
Does it come in other versions?
Does it come in other versions?
Yes. The same star dial comes in a white carbon case with a black bezel, and this black case also comes with a black dial ringed in rainbow colours and a winged emblem.
Does it need a battery?
Does it need a battery?
No. It is automatic — it winds from the motion of your wrist. Left off for a couple of days it stops, and a minute back on the wrist restarts it.
How long does delivery take?
