44.25MM BLACK CERAMIC · MOON RELIEF DIAL · AUTOMATIC CHRONOGRAPH
Black On Black, Until One Yellow Hand Moves
The moon's surface is raised across the dial in black, and only the light picks it out.
The surface of the moon is raised across this dial — craters, ridges, open plains — and then left black, on a black dial, inside a black ceramic case. The relief itself has no silver or grey on it. You see it only where light catches an edge and throws a shadow.
Against that much black, one colour is enough. The long central chronograph seconds hand is lacquered yellow, and when the chronograph runs it sweeps the whole moon, the one warm colour moving across it.
The rest of the yellow is small and placed with care: the script under twelve, the hands on the counters at three and six, a few ticks, tiny squares at the ends of several markers, and the stitching on the strap.

THE DIAL
Three Counters, A Window And A Rocket
Between seven and nine the moon gives way to the blackened movement.
Between seven and nine o'clock the relief gives way to an opening, and through it you see the movement, blackened so the window reads as part of the same dark face. A small sun-shaped wheel shows through a round opening just right of the centre.
The counter at nine is the small seconds: a moon-textured centre inside a black ring of white ticks, with a white hand shaped like a rocket. At three sits a black counter with white numerals, a few yellow ticks and a yellow hand. At six, a black counter with fine circular graining, white numerals at the quarters and another yellow hand.
The hour and minute hands are black swords filled with white lume. The hour markers are white luminous batons, and a white railway track circles the outer ring.
How A Black Moon Is Made To Show
Black on black only works if the relief has real depth. Five steps get it there.
A Case Fired Black
The case is formed from ceramic and fired at high temperature until it is hard, dense and black through its whole thickness. It leaves the kiln lighter than steel and very difficult to scratch.
The Surface Raised
The moon's surface is formed on the dial in relief, so the craters and ridges stand up with real depth. Depth is what makes it visible later, because colour will not help.
Everything Blackened
Dial and relief are finished black, and so is the movement behind them, which keeps the opening between seven and nine from breaking the dark surface.
Yellow, Lacquered
The central chronograph seconds hand is finished in yellow lacquer, and the same yellow is used on the script, the two counter hands and the marker tips. On a dial this dark it is the colour the eye finds first.
The Rocket Hand
The small-seconds hand at nine is turned as a tiny three-dimensional rocket and finished white, so it stands out over the moon texture in its counter.

Why This Dial Rewards A Tilt Of The Wrist
A moon left black has to be raised deeply enough to show by shadow alone, and it needs a case of fired ceramic rather than coated metal to sit in. Here it is, with its yellow hand and the rocket at nine, for $849.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you actually see the moon on a black dial?
Can you actually see the moon on a black dial?
Yes, and it changes as you move. The surface is raised, so light catches the crater rims and the ridges throw small shadows. Under soft light it reads as textured black; under a lamp or in sunlight the whole relief comes up.
What is the opening between seven and nine?
What is the opening between seven and nine?
A window cut through the dial onto the movement, which is blackened so it sits in with the rest of the face. A small sun-shaped wheel also shows through a round opening just right of the centre.
Which parts are yellow?
Which parts are yellow?
The central chronograph seconds hand, the script beneath twelve, the hands and a few ticks on the counters at three and six, small squares at the ends of several markers, and the stitching on the strap. The bezel scale, the numerals and the print at twelve are white.
What is the small hand at nine?
What is the small hand at nine?
The small seconds, which runs all the time. Its hand is a white rocket, turning over a moon-textured centre.
Is the case ceramic all the way through?
Is the case ceramic all the way through?
Yes. The case, bezel, crown and pushers are black ceramic fired at high temperature, not steel with a black finish. It weighs half what steel would, it is very hard to scratch, and it is non-magnetic and low-allergy.
What strap does it come on?
What strap does it come on?
Black rubber, perforated with rows of small holes, with yellow stitching down each edge that carries the dial's one colour onto the wrist.
Does it need a battery?
Does it need a battery?
No. It is automatic — it winds from the motion of your wrist. Left off for a couple of days it stops, and a minute back on the wrist restarts it.
How long does delivery take?
