44.25MM BLACK CERAMIC · CARBON WEAVE DIAL · AUTOMATIC CHRONOGRAPH
Dressed In A Racing Yacht's Colours
Carbon weave and black ceramic, with red kept for a short, deliberate list.
Walk along the dock at a sailing regatta and the racing boats share a look: bare carbon, black fittings, white numbers, and red on whatever a crew has to find fast. Nothing on them is there to decorate.
This watch wears the same palette. The case, bezel, crown and pushers are black ceramic. The dial is a grey-and-black carbon-fibre weave. The bezel numerals, the hour markers and the counter numerals are white, so it reads at a glance.
Red goes on a short list and nowhere else: the chronograph seconds hand, the script, small squares on the minute track, the sector and hand at three, the swirl at six, the lower pusher, one word on the bezel and the strap's stitching. Start the chronograph and the thing moving across the carbon is red.

THE DIAL
Woven Carbon, Cut Open To The Movement
A grey-and-black basket weave, a window onto the movement, and three counters dressed three different ways.
The weave is grey and black, laid in a basket pattern that shifts as light moves over it. Between seven and nine o'clock it stops, and the dial is cut away to show the grey skeletonised movement underneath. Just right of the centre, a round opening frames a small sun-shaped wheel.
The counter at nine is the small seconds: a black honeycomb texture, white ticks and a thin white hand. At three, a black counter carries white numerals and a red graduated sector across its top, with a red hand. At six, a large red swirl around a black centre fills the whole counter.
A fine white railway track runs round the black outer ring, and the hour and minute hands are black swords filled with white lume, so they stand clear of the weave.
How Red Gets Onto Black Ceramic
Five steps, from a fired black case to the red details that finish it.
Fired Black
The case, bezel, crown and pushers start as ceramic shaped in a mould and go into the kiln at high temperature. The black is in the material, so there is no coating on top to wear through at the edges.
The Bezel Scale
The tachymeter scale is engraved into the black ceramic bezel and every numeral is filled white. The scale's one word is done in red, the first hint of the colour.
The Weave Cut Open
The carbon weave dial is cut away between seven and nine o'clock. The edge of that opening sits directly over the movement, so it has to be clean.
The Red Print
The script, the small squares on the minute track and the graduated sector on the counter at three go on in red, lined up against the weave and the white markers.
The Swirl, Matched
The red swirl that fills the counter at six is repeated on the end of the lower pusher. The two sit a finger's width apart on the watch, so the reds have to agree.

Why The Red Works
Black ceramic has to be fired and then worked with abrasives, because nothing softer will cut it, which is why black chronographs are usually coated steel instead. This one is ceramic from bezel to pushers, dressed in carbon and red, and it costs $849.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the case really ceramic, or coated steel?
Is the case really ceramic, or coated steel?
Ceramic. The case, bezel, crown and pushers are black ceramic fired at high temperature, so the black is the material itself and there is nothing to wear off at the edges. It is half the weight of steel, very hard to scratch, and it does not tarnish or pick up magnetism.
Is the dial carbon fibre?
Is the dial carbon fibre?
The dial is a grey-and-black carbon-fibre basket weave. Between seven and nine o'clock it is cut open, so part of the grey skeletonised movement shows through.
Where exactly is the red?
Where exactly is the red?
On the long central chronograph seconds hand, the script under twelve, small squares on the minute track, the graduated sector and hand on the counter at three, the swirl filling the counter at six, the end of the lower pusher, one word on the bezel, and the stitching on the strap. Everything else is black, grey or white.
Does the chronograph work?
Does the chronograph work?
Yes. The pusher above the crown starts and stops the red central hand, and the lower one, with the red swirl on its end, resets it.
Is there a date window?
Is there a date window?
No. There is no date on this dial, which keeps the weave clear around the three counters.
What is the strap like?
What is the strap like?
Black, perforated with rows of small round holes, with a line of red stitching down each edge to pick up the red on the dial.
Does it need a battery?
Does it need a battery?
No. It is automatic — it winds from the motion of your wrist. Left off for a couple of days it stops, and a minute back on the wrist restarts it.
